SIR – The Government has launched the Red Tape Challenge seriously attempting to remove the massive regulation of British business during the 13 years of Labour governance of the UK.
Labour matched ‘spend, spend, spend’ with ‘regulate, regulate, regulate’ to such an extent the country got six new regulations a day. Is there any wonder the private sector faltered and stopped adding to staff and employment?
Tony Blair, when Leader of the Opposition in the early 1990s, convinced his socialist comrades to ditch the infamous Clause 4, increasing his party’s election chances.
The socialists agreed to abandon directly controlling the heights of the economy through nationalisation, but achieve similar by adding to excessive business regulation and taxation.
This plan is Clause 4 via an alternative route. The Coalition Government must work tirelessly to remove these burdens from British business.
