SIR – Diabetes UK has places available for this year’s Bupa Great North Run on Sunday, September 18. Last year our team of runners raised thousands towards finding a cure for diabetes and supporting people with the condition. We want to achieve even more this year.
There are over 230,000 people with diabetes in Yorkshire and the Humber, and a further 85,000 who have Type 2 diabetes but don’t know it. Diabetes can lead to devastating complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and lower limb amputation.
Diabetes is also increasingly affecting young people and children. There are currently around 25,000 people under 25 with Type 1 diabetes who need daily insulin injections just to stay alive. Funds raised from the Great North Run will help us to continue supporting those with the condition and fund research for a cure.
Anyone with their own place for the run can also join the Diabetes UK team. For further information, contact Lisa Stafford at our regional office in Darlington on (01325) 488606 or e-mail lisa.stafford@diabetes.org. uk.
