SIR – To inform David Rhodes (Letters April 27), the mileage figures quoted that Council officers like my husband can claim are not purely for the diesel bought, but are designed to offset in some small way the wear and tear on their privately-owned (and purchased) vehicles.
They also have to pay for fully-comprehensive insurance with business use for the right to use their own vehicles for their work.
In other businesses, workers drive firm’s vehicles without paying for the fuel themselves and use their firm’s insurance and nobody moans about this, do they?
My husband would not get his site visits to public enquiries done in the day if he had to use our abominable public transport, so maybe its time to lay off Council officers for a while – it’s a falsehood that they are all overpaid.
