SIR – In Enviro Watch (T&A, April 20), Keith Thomson states that he keeps an eye on what is going on in garden centres and supermarkets regarding peat-based composts.
Yes. Mr Thomson, many garden centres and supermarkets are still selling composts based on peat.
The reason why peat is still being used is because, as Mr Thompson states, peat acts like a sponge and holds water. I have tried many alternatives, and found that most are as good as the proverbial ‘chocolate teapot’. Peter Seabrook, the well-known gardening expert, gets hot under the collar over the issue, and will use no other.
Until a really effective alternative is put on the market, experienced gardeners will continue to use peat.
