SIR – In the early summer of 1923, the captain of Kent County Cricket Club, Lt Col Lionel Troughton, received an invitation from the North of Scotland Cricket League to bring his full county side and play three exhibition matches in mid-September.
His management committee approved the project, provided all expenses should be borne by the league, which in turn agreed to guarantee a sum not exceeding £300. The tour went ahead and a good time was had by all, even though the matches were more than a little one-sided.
The point I am making is that in today’s money, £300 is the equivalent of about £14,000. So when Mr Goodwin (Letters, April 1) asks how much his church contributed to the Japan Disaster Fund in the same year, simple mathematics tells me that the congregation contributed the equivalent of about £100.
