SIR – Re ‘Height of Hypocrisy’, (Letters, April 4). Your correspondent, Mr Bonallie, attended a meeting in Wrose when I pointed out Coun John Watmough was campaigning to save library facilities in Wrose (not the building). Not a Lib Dem supporter, he chooses to ignore that to falsely criticise us.

Having persuaded the Tories three years ago to remove Wrose library from a closure list, we have constantly looked to combine it with other public facilities, eg a ‘hub’ involving a local church and community facilities.

Is Mr Bonallie confusing us with Labour when accusing us of going against pledges when in power? If referring to one broken promise on tuition fees, the leadership felt driven to that by the mess left by Labour.

Manifesto pledges implemented in only one year include: Increased capital gains tax for high earners; raising income allowances taking 880,000 out of tax and more in future years; a £900 million crackdown on tax avoidance and evasion; relinking pensions to earnings – or a 2.5 per cent increase if greater; scrapped ID cards proposals; creating a UK Green Investment Bank for green infrastructure; (poor) pupil premium.

I could go on (and on).

Coun John Hall (Lib Dem, Windhill and Wrose)
