St Ives is an amenity for all and a terrific facility for the area.
It is a great place for children to play in; it is a tranquil retreat for adults to walk in, and it is provided to those who use it as a privilege; a facility for all to enjoy.
If some people abuse this privilege, it can unfortunately spoil the fun for everybody else.
We have seen reported recent incidents of motorists abusing each other and cars parking on grass verges, posing a risk to pedestrians.
Visitors who use this amenity have to accept they have a duty to drive and park responsibly.
They should use the parking available instead of the verges, and make sure they show consideration for others by not blocking roads or causing an obstruction for pedestrians.
St Ives is increasingly popular as a leisure destination, and the recent good weather has exacerbated that.
In some ways, the estate has become a victim of its own success, but motorists should also look to themselves.
There are occasions when drivers decide to just leave the car in the most convenient place for them without showing any consideration as to how difficult it will be for pedestrians in particular to walk around them.
Bradford Council is looking at ways of improving the situation. It is planning to redesign existing car parks and is also looking at ways of using other areas of the St Ives estate for parking.
But if it does put in more parking, it also needs to take measures to prevent people from parking in areas that cause inconvenience to other visitors.
And drivers themselves need to recognise their own personal responsibilities and accept that sometimes they may not be able to park as close to the amenities as they would like.
