SIR – I read with regret about the closure of Drummond Road baths. Once again it is a matter of getting rid of everything that is old.
I was brought up in the area, and with family and friends I learned to swim there. We joined the thriving Manningham Swimming Club, and each Saturday evening had a water polo match, sometimes playing the Dolphins at Windsor Baths.
We all sat round the edge of the pool and had long roller towels in front of our legs to keep dry from splashes.
There were bathrooms in one area known as Slipper Baths, and used by locals who were without bathrooms.
Children from local schools were able to have free tuition each week, Friday afternoons were given to sports such as football, cricket, netball and rounders.
We sometimes had a walk in Manningham Park and were taught about horticulture – we walked everywhere.
