SIR – Seemingly Colin McPhee is critical of local councillors for their different views on the cut backs of local authority spending (T&A, March 29).
Maybe he is just witnessing political tactics.
We cannot let the cuts to the library service go unchallenged. With my local councillor’s help, I presented a petition to the full Council. Others also did the same for their threatened library facilities.
The Wrose petition clearly asked for the library to be retained while a better solution was created. Initially, the Council has agreed to the provision of a mobile unit. But where could that safely operate on the busy Wrose Road?
Other views are that volunteers could help in staffing or that facilities could be provided by a retail outlet.
The library service needs to take a more active role in promoting branch libraries rather than the current ‘use it or don’t use it’ approach.
Better and more frequent opening hours, frequent rotation of stock, local school involvement and small exhibitions could create more interest and use.
We have lost our community centre and now the library is threatened.
The loss of services to a community starts a community decline.
