SIR – The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line – Halifax/Bradford Link, is dedicated to offering respite care to children aged ten to 13 from Belarus.
April 26 marks the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, and as a local link we have already started organising our summer calendar.
Host families look after a Belarussian child during their stay here in England.
The health problems caused by the disaster include an increased risk of thyroid cancers and leukaemia. The weeks spent away from a still-contaminated country in which they live, gives their immune systems a huge boost and time to recover.
We are looking for new families who would like to host a child for ten days this summer.
We organise lots of trips and fun activities during the three-week visit of which anybody hosting a child is invited to attend. We offer lots of assistance before and during the visit and we have an interpreter on hand, so don’t be put off by the language barrier.
If you feel you could offer a loving home to a child or become a volunteer and enjoy the activities during the summer, call me for more information on (01422) 372994.
