SIR – In response to the letter from Naomi Philips, ‘The need for organs’ (T&A, January 4), I would like to clarify to readers that NHS Blood and Transplant is neither for nor against a change to presumed consent legislation.
While we welcome any debate that raises the value and importance of organ donation and encourages UK citizens to discuss the need for organs for transplantation and join the organ donor register, we will work within whatever legislative framework is introduced in any of the four health administrations in the United Kingdom.
Currently, we are working towards supporting the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Organ Donation Taskforce’s first report, which are seen as critical prerequisites for improving organ donation in the UK.
Since the Taskforce report in 2008, organ donor numbers have risen 25 per cent and we are on track to bring about a 50 per cent increase by 2013.
The number of potential donors registered on the NHS Organ Donor Register currently stands at more than 17.7 million.
However, with three people dying every day due to lack of an available organ, it is important people make aware their desire to donate with close family members and friends.
To join the NHS Organ Donor Register, call 0300 1232323 or visit organdonation.nhs.uk.
