SIR – I read with interest the item, ‘Campaigners hail retirement age ban’ (T&A, January 14) and the reasons to support this change.
To pick out two of these reasons, we have: 1 – “Older workers can play an incredibly important role in the workplace.” 2 – “Allowing them to work longer will create jobs for the young.”
What claptrap. With regard to (1), it is true they have experience, but if they have not passed this on to the next in line, then there is great mismanagement somewhere.
Also, the person looking to move up will see his way blocked, not a good thing for workplace satisfaction.
With regard to (2), how on earth can keeping someone on at the top make jobs for the ones lower down – it is a contradiction. It makes even less sense when we are all aware there few enough jobs going around as it is.
So what is the real reason, what is the hidden agenda?
I propose it could be, that during the next five years, a great number of the ‘Baby Boomers’ will be coming on to the retirement market, will be dissatisfied with the pension, and make a lot of ‘political noise’.
This is something the current administration would like to avoid, just as they are coming up to the end of the current parliament, for obvious reasons.
