SIR – In your editorial regarding the poor man who died near a takeaway toilet (T&A, January 5), you say you use the words “despite the kindness of strangers who gave him food”.

They were indeed kind, but they would have been even more so had they insisted the appropriate authority made suitable alternative accommodation available for him and that he be made to go to it.

He was a poor immigrant, and what a terrible death in this day and age.
