SIR – A while ago, I complained in a letter to the T&A about the display of samurai swords at Barkers newsagent in Sunbridge Road, and now the Reverend Chris Howson has condemned the sale of imitation crossbows in the city centre shop (T&A, December 24). Let’s see what impression he makes.

The law says crossbows must not be sold to under-18s, as if on attaining that age everyone becomes mature and sensible.

What nonsense! Bradford’s self-styled ‘Crossbow Cannibal’, Stephen Griffiths was nearly 40 when he used one of these weapons for murder.

And the T&A reported on December 30 that two robbers held up a post office armed with a crossbow, pointing the weapon towards the sub-postmaster in Plymouth, Devon, as they asked for cash and cigarettes.

If the Government won’t ban these lethal weapons, then Bradford Council should introduce a by-law to stop these ‘novelty’ shops plying a profitable but deadly trade.
