SIR – Here’s a sobering fact that may go unreported amid the cuts misery coming our way.

Last month, carbon dioxide levels touched a new high of 390 parts per million – a 40 per cent increase on pre-industrial levels.

Pumped into the atmosphere by factories and cars, carbon dioxide warms the atmosphere. In 1990, 350 ppm was passed, the maximum figure our planet could tolerate without suffering climate change.

Consequently, deserts are spreading, glaciers and ice caps melting and coastal areas flooding.

The complacency bred by climate change sceptics will be unforgiveable to future generations. So two cold winters make a difference? Not to the climatic trend.

An even more alarming fact to finish: the biggest fall in statistics last year was the number of people worrying about climate change.
