SIR – On the fantasy proposal to ‘twin’ Bradford with Sydney, Australia (oh, how they laughed in Sydney!), Council Leader, Ian Greenwood, is to be applauded for his surprisingly astute comment.
His statement (T&A, January 4): “But I wouldn’t want to comment on it for a while because it will be seen as councillors trotting off to Sydney on junkets at a time when people are threatened with redundancy”, does at least demonstrate some belated awareness of how the citizenry feels about its elected officials’ perceived priorities.
The only part to question is his phrase “for a while”, implying a temporary state. I suggest that this idea be permanently parked in the ‘Can’t Get Away With It’ file because, after the rampant profligacy of so many MPs and the pocket-lining perception of local politicians, the only acceptable action now for any such junket, is to junk it.
