SIR – The British Humanist Association welcomes the reports of an increase in the level of organ donations but, as Sally Johnson, the director of organ donation, stated, with on average three people dying a day from a lack of available organs, we have an urgent need for a system of presumed-consent. If the system is changed so individuals must actively opt-out should they wish their organs not to be donated after their death, the personal, cultural or religious wishes of those who do not wish to donate can still be accommodated, but the increase in available organs would save lives on a daily basis.
In the meantime, it is essential the campaign to raise awareness of the real need for organs and promote discussion continues.
