SIR – It appears that logical thinking does not come easily to politicians.

Central Government are reducing their funding to Bradford Council by £67 million over the next two years.

The result is that Bradford Council will have to reduce staff numbers by 2,000.

The result of that will be that Central Government will now have to pay unemployment to these people.

This could be as much as £40 million over two years, so the saving will not be all that great, and if they stay out of work after this date, then the Government could end up out of pocket.

What kind of Government would rather pay people to be out of work rather than serving the general public?

And we pay people to make these decisions.
