SIR – Leader of Bradford Council Ian Greenwood is complaining and has warned there will be a “massive” impact on jobs and services following Government funding cuts.

I wonder why this should be? Instead of whining and complaining, spreading fear and despondency and trying to make political gain of it, shouldn’t our councillors be doing what they are supposed to do, and that is running a more efficient operation?

They should be doing what is, for the owners of private businesses, basic procedures – that is keeping a firm hand on expenses, cutting out waste and duplication, centralising purchasing, becoming more efficient generally and streamlining productivity.

There are so many ways of making this operation more efficient.

For example, scrapping useless, politically-correct ‘non-jobs’ and, dare we say it, reducing the colossal expenses bandwagon along with the massive salaries and gold-plated pension pots of councillors and senior executives. All these savings and efficiencies could be made before starting to consider cuts to frontline services. It just needs the know-how, the backbone and the political will to carry them out.
