SIR – I have been investigating the new voting system that is proposed (AV) and on which we are supposed to get a vote.

We are being sold on the idea that no vote will be wasted, and that it is a fairer system, when in fact it is neither.

My simple reading of the system, as proposed, is that the votes are counted, and whoever gets least votes is out, and the voters’ second choice comes into play.

This is where the rot starts. What this means is that the lesser parties, which need time to grow and prove their credentials, are snuffed out at the beginning, and the big parties will always be the winners.

So, as I say, it is not fairer.

As to saying your vote will not be wasted, this is good political speak, as no vote is ever wasted, it is just that the party you voted for did not get in This system, to me, is no better than one that is rigged for only the big players to win, with no dissenting voices in the background. Until they come up with something far better, I advise to vote against.
