SIR – The latest cuts in Government funding to Bradford are, as Ian Greenwood points out, most likely to affect the elderly, the disabled, and those on low incomes.
Surely it’s time to ditch the one-track approach to economic regeneration with its focus on job creation, and develop a twin-track approach that includes the development of a benefit economy through a series of welfare benefit campaigns putting money in the pockets of those who really need it.
Benefit money gets spent locally, supports small business, and gives people the financial breathing space that they may need to improve their work prospects.
The Government will, of course, discourage such campaigns, and the Department of Work and Pensions might refuse to co-operate, but it’s time that the Council, the NHS, and the voluntary worked together to ensure that those who haven’t caused the crisis aren’t materially affected by it.
