Bradford City’s final home game of last season was marred by a pitch invasion by supporters, some of whom then went on to taunt opposition fans.
Such scenes were particularly disappointing as the game marked the 25th anniversary of the Bradford City Fire Disaster.
But there was nothing disappointing about the response from the club and police which was both decisive and effective.
As a result of their efforts, four supporters have been given life bans, 20 have been banned from matches in the coming season and 16 have been issued with good-behaviour contracts, which they have to sign before entering the stadium again.
The club will continue to try to identify others involved in the incident when the new season kicks off.
This should be sufficient warning to anyone intent on causing trouble that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
But in case they have not got the message, West Yorkshire Police’s Football Banning Order Unit has warned that those guilty of yobbish behaviour at matches will not get away with it.
These are welcome words which hopefully mean that we can look forward to reporting on the Bantams for all the right reasons this season – which means a successful promotion campaign, starting this weekend.
