SIR – It’s all very well for Gerry Sutcliffe MP to criticise Bradford East’s new Lib-Dem MP David Ward over VAT, but which way did he vote when former Chancellor Alastair Darling increased fuel duty to negate the temporary VAT reduction last year?
This not only penalised private motorists yet again, but was a crippling blow to the UK road haulage industry, because, unlike input VAT on diesel which can be recovered, the extra tax can’t – a serious oncost in already difficult trading conditions.
With ‘New’ Labour having inflicted the highest fuel taxes in the European Union here, British hauliers now pay 20 times more per tonne for their carbon emissions than anybody else in the EU emissions trading scheme.
