It is only fair to acknowledge police efforts to tackle the numbers of uninsured drivers on our roads.
But despite making significant progress, it is also fair to say that it is still an issue which causes huge public concern.
That is hardly surprising when the impact this crime has on the law-abiding motorist is taken into consideration.
Recent reports in the T&A revealed the high, and sometimes ridiculously high, insurance quotes given to drivers in various parts of Bradford – something which was directly linked to the number of uninsured drivers in these areas.
But rogue drivers do not just hit everyone else’s pocket.
We must also remember that they tend not to be the safest, so can be a real danger to other road users and pedestrians.
This latter point was clearly illustrated in a recent case involving a driver who is now serving 15 months inside for dangerous driving, driving without insurance and without a licence.
Many uninsured drivers are caught through planned operations but in this instance it was more a case of good, routine police work.
But however it is achieved, one fewer menace on the roads is always welcome, as are the words of PC Winterbottom, an officer involved in the investigation, who warned: “If you are not legally entitled to be on the roads, we will be targeting you.”
