SIR – Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Jeanette Sunderland voted against Sir Ken Morrison becoming a Freeman of the City, apparently because, in her view, he had not made any outstanding contributions on the national stage, even though he has opened 425 stores across the country, employing thousands.
Brian Noble qualified for the honour in 2006 for simply coaching a local rugby team. And Green group leader Councillor Martin Love felt that it wasn’t appropriate for the supermarket guru to be made a Freeman because he had made an awful lot of money “out of doing what he does” (T&A, July 19), conveniently ignoring the fact that Sir Ken had always stuck by Bradford and event built his HQ in the city.
David Hockney left his home town to live in the USA and pocketed millions, yet was still admitted to the roll of Honorary Freeman in 2000.
Thank goodness the majority of councillors have ensured that Sir Ken will have Bradford’s highest honour bestowed on him.
