SIR – Having read why more than a dozen councillors voted against Sir Ken Morrison becoming a Freeman of the City of Bradford – how important do they want someone to be before they obtain this accolade?
The older generation, one of which I am very proud to be, owed a great deal to this man who built up his empire of supermarkets from very meagre beginnings.
They should ask the older people of this city who remember the stalwarts of the past when this smokey city had such men with foresight and who gave so many people a job – for which the existing workforce must also be very grateful.
Lastly, he has remained around Bradford and long may his family be proud of what they achieved. Hopefully they will continue to support our city from the depths to which it has unfortunately plummeted.
Mrs B M Bailey, Flawith Drive, Fagley, Bradford
EDITOR’S NOTE: Sir Ken Morrison will be admitted to the role of Honorary Freeman of the City after at least two thirds of councillors voted in favour at a meeting earlier this month.
