The number of people enjoying nights out on the town grows during the summer months, and while many strike the right balance between letting their hair down and remaining in control, there are those who go too far.
Some revellers are drunk before they even leave home because they have filled up with cheap supermarket alcohol – something known as ‘pre-loading’.
Once they reach the clubs and bars, they take full advantage of cheap drink and long licensing hours and, by the end of the evening, they are extremely drunk or even virtually incapacitated.
Such behaviour is degrading and can damage their health, but it also makes them very vulnerable.
In particular, women who get in such a state can be targeted by sex attackers.
That is why local police, Bradford’s own Street Angels and others are getting out and about to warn revellers of the dangers and urging them to drink sensibly and take some simple precautions.
This operation has been carried out during the summer and Christmas period – another busy time – for the last two years, and has cut the number of sex offences by 71 per cent.
That is an impressive result and one worth celebrating, even if the fact that such an initiative is necessary in the first place is somewhat depressing.
