SIR – Although not a golfer myself, the Open Championship from St Andrews was very enjoyable and relaxing on TV.
As a youth in Scotland, we watched the open at Royal Troon in Ayrshire by going in at the Aberdeen Gate.
A 200-yard paddle along the beach, shoes on, then off the beach into the course!
Remember also when football and rugby matches opened the gates at half time? When Headingley Test matches were free after tea?
And people went to free pop festivals, such as the Isle of Wight in 1969 and 1970 to see people like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and The Who?
How times have changed!
