SIR – Since before the General Election and led by David Cameron, a number of your correspondents, including Terry Tordoff and Councillor Roger Taylor, have railed against Quangos, describing them as a bloated waste of money contributing to the fact that our country – to quote Coun Taylor – is now bust.
I wonder if any of those who have expressed their outrage actually know what a Quango is, what they do, and if they didn’t exist, who would do the work they currently undertake?
Do they know, for instance, that their hate figures include the BBC, Channel 4, the Armed Forces Pay Review Body, the Ordnance Survey, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Charity Commission, and the National Archive?
All in all, there are 1,172 Quasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organisations, of which 469 are local authorities.
Perhaps Mr Taylor could make a start by agreeing that the number of councillors on Calderdale Council be halved, thereby saving Council tax payers many thousands of pounds in the payment of expenses.
