SIR – Plans have been submitted to replace property between Barry Street and Sackville Street in Bradford with apartments and office suites.

This would involve demolishing the former Duchess of Kent pub on Sackville Street and the building that adjoins it on Barry Street, the former Bradford Shop Supplies.

These were empty for a number of years, but have recently been refurbished and put back into use as a nightclub and bars for the gay community.

It feels like we are going back in time to the 1960s and 1970s when perfectly good buildings were demolished for ones that haven’t stood the test of time.

Why demolish part of the city centre that has remained intact, has character and has been re-used for a modern-day purpose?

And who would want to live in an area that has become a new hub for the city’s nightlife, with Rios, Zuu bar, Candy and Lingards nightclubs all surrounding the site?

I’m not sure the city’s gay community would be happy to see a couple of venues go before the bulldozers either. I hope common sense prevails.
