SIR – In 2002, the recently-retired Bishop of Bradford, the Right Rev David James, played a significant role in persuading Muslims to go on the two-million strong London demo against the Iraq war.
The Bishop argued that people of faith should unite and work together to speak up against oppression and injustice.
My most abiding memory of the Bishop, however, was his willingness to jump with me on a bouncy castle at a fundraising bazaar I organised at my church in aid of the Viva Palestina convoy.
I have a photo taken of that occasion by Nafees Nazir, who made a presentation on behalf of Bradford’s Muslim community at the celebration of Bishop David’s life and work at Bradford Cathedral last Sunday.
He had a wonderful sense of fun. I remember him scattering water over the congregation at a confirmation service, and wading into the river waters to baptise the faithful on one of the coldest days of the year.
He will be sadly missed.
