SIR – There has rightly been much comment in recent times concerning the number of “non-jobs” in local councils (and quangos) throughout the country.
It was therefore good to see Eric Pickles, the new Communities Secretary, joining the debate and suggesting that councils conduct a review of all posts, as well as providing details of these to ratepayers so that they can give their views on the effectiveness of these positions.
The excellent letter from John Pashley (T&A, July 12) highlighted part of this issue by pointing out the size of the regeneration department within Bradford Council. Without question it is far too large.
Can we now expect – as we should – that our Council will indeed review all posts to see just how necessary they are in the current climate, and share this with local residents?
I suspect that this issue could be meaningfully addressed without, in many cases, severely affecting necessary front-line services. Nothing should be sacrosanct in these difficult times.
