SIR – I write regarding your story about Mark Watts (T&A, July 10), the hike in car insurance premiums and subsequent justification by insurance companies for the rise in premiums in certain postcodes followed by a drop in others.
I find this difficult to understand, as surely accidental damage occurs irrespective of postcode?
Further to this, if those in areas with low premiums were to drive in areas outside the postcode in which they are paying premiums, surely the probabilities of being involved in a collision would be the same.
It would be interesting to know which insurance companies consider which postcodes in Bradford to be free from risk of accidental damage and whether drivers are charged according to the amount of mileage they do in particular postcodes.
And with profit margins in big business being on the increase across the board, would the hike in certain postcodes not mean that this is likely to lead to a further increase in uninsured drivers on the road, creating more chances of running into an uninsured driver, or vice-versa?
Heaven forbid, as this would also result in a further increase in premium, but only if you live in a certain postcode.
