It is no exaggeration to say that Bradford Royal Marine Liam Brentley cheated death.
The Commando, a former professional rugby league player, was serving his country in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province when he was shot in the head.
The bullet entered near his ear and exited out the back of his skull yet, miraculously, he was not killed.
After initial treatment in Afghanistan, the 25-year-old was flown back to the UK for major neurosurgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Selly Oak, Birmingham, where he has been surrounded by his loved ones.
It is clear that Liam, who is married and has one child, with another on the way, has a close and loving family and so much to live for.
The fact that he chose to go to Afghanistan in the first place speaks volumes for his courage and devotion to duty.
As a country, we are fortunate to have such brave men and women prepared to serve with such distinction and selflessness.
Obviously he has had an amazing escape, but, as his mother says, he now faces a long road to recovery.
It is a journey he will take with his family by his side and, we are sure, accompanied by the best wishes of the people of this district.
