SIR – What a terrific picture they made (T&A, June 30)! Two public schoolboys, a multi-millionaire, one ex-Tory Councillor, and the rest, sat on the very outskirts of a city they apparently think of as “the heart of the industrial north”.
This perceptive judgement worries me, because I have, since the Thatcher era, watched the slow death of nearly all the industry here about.
The sop they offer Yorkshire is the promise of part of a £1 billion fund to promote commercial and technical development.
This is, of course, in light of the fact that they have refused to assist Sheffield’s Forgemasters with their plans for future development.
This assistance could make them part of the leading group of component manufacturers to the nuclear industry, which the Government have said is vital to the nation’s future power requirements, thus not allowing us in Bradford – “the heart of the industrial north” – to tender for any of the outsourced work this would create.
As a pensioner on a fixed income, I have to try and accept that this next five years will apparently hurt them as much as it will me. Yeah, right!
