SIR – There is an apparently successful company in Bradford which places a large advertisement in a national Sunday newspaper each week, representing its exotic wares to high-spending customers around the country. There’s nothing wrong with that – it’s good business.
But nowhere in the advert does it say that the company is based in Bradford and no postal address is given.
Indeed, it even goes so far as to prefix its 01274 phone number with the word “Yorkshire”, not “Bradford”. Now, I’ve checked with BT, and there’s no dialling code for Yorkshire. There never has been.
01274 is the dialling code for Bradford, nowhere else, but it seems to be considered inappropriate to mention this salient fact to that company’s wealthy customers elsewhere.
Maybe it’s the true measure that Bradford’s number really is up when its own local folk do not want to let the outside world know that’s where they are.
