SIR - Recently I visited the exhibition of designs at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television for the Odeon site, eager to view the proposals, drafted by leading development partnerships after a global competition.

I eventually found a small temporary display tucked away in a corner as though ashamed to be seen. This display was not quite as impressive as the T&A's centre spread on the designs, and I am now even more convinced that Bradford Centre Regeneration will do exactly as it pleases, despite the wishes of the Bradford public.

My greatest disappointment was that none of the three proposals mentioned a concert/conference hall, which was the most popular suggestion put forward by T&A readers.

This site cries out for such a facility and if it is ignored Bradford will have missed a golden opportunity to provide something which no other city in West Yorkshire can offer.

Bradford Pivot and NewVictoria Place are acceptable designs which could be seen in any city anywhere in the world, but Casa Mela is obviously a joke, cobbled together by a committee of ten-year-olds. It is a poor copy of Disney's Toon Town and I quite expected to see Daffy Duck appearing, being chased by Mr Magoo.

  • EDITOR'S NOTE: The T&A reported on March 20 that expert consultants had ruled out the possibility of using the Odeon site for a concert hall on cost and size grounds and that the Council was planning to upgrade and expand St George's Hall.
