SIR Once again we are told of exciting new developments in Bradford city centre and your paper shows artists' impressions of collections of shoe boxes or piles of Lego bricks, but where is the architecture?

The Broadway complex sounds grand but if it is not open to its surroundings it will be a disaster. Continuity of shopping is a basic principle of town planning.

It is also vital that Broadway remains a public space and that this development is open 24 hours a day (not as in the Arndale).

Two of the suggestions for the Odeon site are monolithic and show nothing of external interest at ground floor level to the passing pedestrian, another planning mistake.

That beginner's knowledge is lacking is illustrated by the proposed lake, not because of the idea in itself, but because its situation blocks vital pedestrian routes, a fundamental error.

If we are to have a centre with the necessary feelgood factor, the planners need to keep their heads firmly in the box (no, not one for shoes) and not in the clouds.
