SIR I read with interest the article by Dr Mohammed Iqbal (T&A, May 9) regarding the BNP. Having been the Conservative candidate for Wyke, I had gone through the same exercise as Dr Iqbal and came very much to the same conclusions.
Indeed a further conclusion was that if this had been a general election then Bradford South would now have a BNP MP, a frightening thought.
What I cannot understand is why people think that by voting for the BNP they are in some way protesting against the main political parties.
Somehow voters seem to have the idea that the BNP will do something once elected. All that happens is that they continue to rant about white supremacy and then do absolutely nothing for the people they represent.
By voting for the BNP they are making sure those who will actually work for their ward are often not elected and then they become even more disinterested.
A final point if the progress of the BNP continues then Bradford, within the next two or three elections will have a BNP-controlled council. Now that is frightening.
