SIR G Goldsbrough lacks the foresight needed to understand why nuclear power is not the best solution (T&A, May 5). Despite his earlier denials to the contrary, climate change is a fact.

Britain needs a comprehensive energy policy focusing on renewable energy if it is to make a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

One of the problems with nuclear power is that it uses up a lot of carbon dioxide. This is due to fossil fuels burned during the mining, conversion and enrichment stages. On top of this we mustn't forget transport how many uranium mines are there in the UK?

Plus, of all the major fuel companies like BP and Shell, none of their budgets for renewables exceeds single-digit percentages of their overall budget. The reason why nuclear power and fossil fuels are so cheap is because of the huge investment that has gone into them.

This investment has produced more efficient ways of producing the same energy, thus reducing costs.

If a significant proportion of this money were diverted to renewables it wouldn't be long before they could produce competitively-priced energy. Then surely both of us would be happy.
