SIR Dr Ali is wrong (T&A, May 8). Far from disproportionate, the sentences of the rioters were scrupulously correct. Riot carries a possible ten years, but after credit for guilty pleas and mitigation, the average sentence was four-and-a-half years, less than half.

The shock reaction was because previous riots had not even led to arrests. Perhaps they thought they could get away with it yet again.

Repeated defence claims that one hooligan or another only threw a few bricks were often heard.

Not all the rioters were little innocents carried away by the excitement of smashing up the city.

Some had previous convictions, some were already on bail at the time and some committed further serious offences before they were finally arrested.

The rioters were having fun. Some paid the price. I felt sorry for their parents and for our city.
