SIR It was a joy to see the Lord Mayor and her husband calling at the Bradford Mechanics' Institute Library during the open day on Saturday.
At a time when little remains to lure people to the city centre, The Mechanics' remains one of the gems. The Lord Mayor recalled that it was in the doorway of the old building opposite the City Hall that she used to meet her husband when they were courting. It was demolished in 1974, but the priceless library was saved and is now housed in Kirkgate.
Although it is a subscription library, the small annual membership fee qualifies people for several extra benefits. It is the most accessible library in the city centre and close to public transport. There is a lift, toilets and coffee available.
In recent years the enterprising committee has provided more opportunities for individual or group study. Each Thursday afternoon some members play friendly vridge and beginners are given help.
