Obesity is one of the modern-day malaises that is fast becoming a serious threat to the quality of our life in this country.
And nowhere more than Bradford, where two out of three adults are deemed to be overweight, is action needed to fight this 21st century killer.
So the results of Bradford Council's Obesity Review Group's report into the scale of the problem in the district and the outlining of an action plan to tackle it, while making for sobering reading, do at least provide evidence that the issue is being treated seriously and steps are being taken to do something about it.
Good health and sensible eating is something that we can all take on board in all parts of our life, so it is good that employers and schools are being encouraged to promote good practice.
Of course, no-one can afford to sit idly back and wait for the experts to come up with a solution.
The fight against obesity and the health problems it brings is one we can and should all take part in.
A recent health campaign urged us all to make small changes in our lives eating more healthily, doing more exercise, giving up smoking to gain big benefits at the end of the day.
By taking responsibility for our own health we can all improve our lives and ensure that in the future Bradford isn't sitting near the top of an unwelcome obesity league table.
