SIR – With regard to Mr Bywater’s comments on the appearance of the Kirkgate Centre (T&A, March 18). He is right, it is an eyesore.
During the early Sixties I had the pleasure of working in one of Bradford’s many fashion shops (yes, we really did have some excellent quality fashion shops in Bradford at that time).
It was opposite Central Library, and when you looked across at this magnificent building you didn’t see a block of dirty concrete but fine stone carvings, which would still have been here today had Kirkgate Market (pictured) not been pulled down like many of our fine buildings in Bradford.
Leeds and Halifax have kept their markets and they thrive on the many varied stalls and atmosphere that pull in lots of shoppers from the areas around.
