Last week, the Telegraph & Argus reported how a charity was devastated by a senseless arson attack.
The yobs had set fire to one of two portable cabins belonging to Newlands Furniture Service, based in Thorpe Edge.
The organisation provides household goods and furniture to the needy in the area and the blaze wiped out half of its stock in one fell swoop.
At the time, this column was at a loss to explain what motivates people who wreck, burn and destroy and how they could have such a lack of consideration for others in their neighbourhood.
Thankfully, such individuals are very much in the minority and the vast majority of people are decent, honest and caring.
If anyone doubts the truth of that statement, they need only look at the magnificent response from the community following the attack.
Well-wishers have rallied round to volunteer and donate goods to replace those lost in the flames, so much so that the charity is back open for business, although at a reduced level.
Brenda Rhodes, the service manager, says this would not have been possible without all the help that came flooding in.
That desire to get the organisation back on its feet and not let the yobs win shows the true spirit of this area while shaming the idiots who caused the damage in the first place.
