SIR – I could not agree more with Dr Kully Johal’s comments in the T&A (“City needs a rethink on parking”, March 23).

The Council should be doing all it can to encourage more people to use the shops in the city centre.

By charging to park on street as planned, it will drive more people away, and instead two hours’ free parking should be introduced, at least in the short term.

With an increasing number of empty shops, what incentives are the Council offering to encourage new businesses and a better variety of shops?

And I’ve often wondered if any of our councillors are regular shoppers in the city centre as I rarely see any when I’m in town, and if so, not with bags of shopping.

It is all right building a park and repaving streets, but the bottom line is the city needs a much greater retail offer and initiatives such as free parking to encourage trade and help businesses thrive.
