SIR – I am originally from Bradford and I am writing about the sad state of affairs regarding the Odeon.
While I believe that there is certainly a case for redevelopment, the plans for New Victoria Place involve total demolition.
Speaking as someone with a post graduate qualification in urban design, I think the Art Deco towers have real architectural merit and deserve to be retained.
The towers give space and definition to the surrounding urban landscape. This is particularly relevant to the city park being constructed nearby and the dome of the Alhambra.
While progress and redevelopment is very important, so is the wider picture of heritage and cityscape.
The bulk of the old Odeon is probably past its sell-by date, but the proposals for the New Victoria Place scheme need amending.
The twin towers of the Odeon could be included in the plans and this would be a win-win situation.
There are many examples of sections of old buildings being retained as part of a new development.
The Council needs to realise people would appreciate the retention of the towers and this in turn would enhance Bradford’s reputation as the City of Film.
