SIR – Terry Tordoff (Letters, March 15) has perhaps missed the importance of digital image capture to photography.

It is a natural progression which could be compared to the invention of the Kodak Brownie which put photography into the hands of the masses. And from the millions of pictures taken on Brownies and other easy-to-use cameras, we have a recorded history of our times.

So “any fool” – his words – can get a reasonable image with a mobile phone or simple digital camera.

This does not detract from photography as an art form. A digital SLR adds to the scope of photography and photographers can use their skills to produce stunning images equal if not better than the old masters Ansel Adams, Cartier Bresson et al.

Terry, look at the work of Tom Ang or Michael Freeman or look online at the National Geographical NG Kids 2009 Photo Competition results, see what can be achieved. Come on, Terry, rise to the challenge, look at the better side of technology.
