Sir – There appears to be a rumour about in the country that Vince Cable would make a good Chancellor of the Exchequer. This is quite incorrect as he has a major flaw; he is a Liberal Democrat.
His political party advocated the UK join the euro from its inception; furthermore this misguided party has constantly challenged the Government from the floor of the House of Commons to take our economy closer to the European model by replacing our pound sterling with the euro.
What a suicidal journey that would have been, having lost our financial independence.
UK base rates could not be 0.5 per cent; there would have been zero quantitative easing, leaving the UK in the same debilitating financial strait-jacket as Greece, Portugal, Spain and the Republic of Ireland. Bankruptcy and unemployment is significantly higher in those restrained economies.
The Liberal Democrat fundamental financial package is clearly erroneous.
