SIR – Last year across Yorkshire and the Humber, two people were killed, there were more than 1,400 major injuries and almost 2,900 incidents that led to employees having to take three days or more off work as a result of slips, trips and falls from height.

These incidents are often treated as trivial, even comical, but they are no joke to those who suffer major injuries, time off work or disability.

They also cost businesses money.

Reducing the likelihood of incidents needn’t be an additional financial burden when actions as simple as changing the way floors are cleaned, or making sure the right access equipment is used for work at height, can make a difference.

HSE’s Shattered Lives campaign, where we are working with local authorities, has been raising awareness of the hazards and encouraging employers to reduce the risks. There is more information on our website at hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives.
